As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
 
Hope the voyage is a long one.
May there be many a summer morning when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to gather stores of knowledge from their scholars.
 
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
 
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
 
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

이타키로 향하는 항해를 시작하며

그 길이 아주 오래오래 계속되길 빌어라.

모험과 배움으로 가득한 그 길이……

라이스트리고네스족과 키클롭스 거인들,

격노한 바다의 신 포세이돈도 두려워하지 말아라.

그런 모험을 다시는 겪을 수 없을 테니…….

그대의 이상이 아무리 높고, 최상의

감동이 그대 몸과 마음을 사로잡아도,

라이스트리고네스족과 키클롭스 거인들,

사나운 포세이돈과 결코 마주치지 않으리,

만일 그들을 네 마음속에 간직하지 않는다면,

네 영혼이 그들을 네 앞에 세우지 않는다면…….

그 여정이 아주 오래오래 계속 되길 빌어라.

그 길에서 수많은 여름날 아침을 맞게 해달라고……

그토록 큰 기쁨과 환희로,

처음 보는 항구들로 들어서게 해달라고

페니키아인들의 시장에서 천천히 거닐면서,

값지고 진귀한 물건들을 좋은 값에 사들여라.

진주조개와 산호, 호박과 흑단을,

또 온갖 종류의 향수도 사고,

쾌락을 불러일으키는 향수를 마음껏 사두어라.

수많은 이집트인들의 도시를 들러,

박식한 현인들에게 취하도록 배워라.

항상 네 머릿속에는 이타키를 그려라.

그곳에 다다르는 것이 너의 최종 운명이니,

그러나 절대로 길을 서두르지 말아라.

차라리 몇 해고 계속되는 것이 좋을 거다.

늙은이가 되어 그 섬에 닿으면,

여행길에서 얻은 깨달음으로 풍요로워진 너는,

이타키가 네게 부귀영화를 줄 것을 기대하지 말아라.

이타키는 너에게 아름다운 여행을 주었다.

이타키가 아니었으면 길을 나서지 않았을 테니까……

그러나 이타키는 더 이상 네게 줄 것이 아무것도 없다.

그리고 이타키가 가난한 것을 새삼 깨닫게 되더라도, 이타키는 널 속인 것이 아니다.

그 풍부한 경험으로 그토록 지혜로워졌으니,

너는 벌써 이타키가 무엇을 의미하는지 알았을 테니…….

오디세우스는 트로이아 전쟁에서 10년 그리고 다시 포세이돈의 심술로 바다에서 표류하기를 10년, 모두 20년을 길에서 보내고 고향 이타키에 영웅이 되어 돌아왔다. 그러나 고향에서 그를 기다리고 있는 것은 따듯한 환대가 아니라 적대적인 108명의 구혼자들이었다. 고향의 골치 아픈 일들을 처리하기 위해 그는 모든 것을 홀로 싸울 수밖에 없었다.

Odysseus returned to home, Ithaka, as hero after 20 years on the road and sea: 10 years at Trojan War, followed by 10 years of drifting on sea, caused by Poseidon’s anger. What was waiting for him at home, on his arrival, was not a warm reception, but 108 hostile suitors. He had to fight alone with the hostile to solve all the troubles caused by them.

카바피스는 오디세우스에게. 길에서 겪은 모든 것은 헛된 미망일 뿐이라고 말한다. 그리고 고향에서 환대받을 것이라는 기대를 하지 말라고 한다. 그런 대모험이 고향에서의 그의 삶에 아무런 도움이 되지 않는다고 타이른다. 그리고 끝으로 이렇게 말한다. 비록 이타키가 가난함을 새삼 발견하게 되더라도 고향을 원망하지 말라고 충고한다. 이타키가 가난했기에 너는 길을 떠났고 그 위대한 모험을 하게 된 것임을 잊지 말라고 당부한다.

Cavafy says that all that Odysseus went through on the road and sea were just vain illusions. He also says that Odysseus should not have expected to be warmly welcome. He admonishes that Odysseus’ adventure could not have given any help for his life at home at all. He also says at the end as follows: Odysseus should not have complained even though he found poverty at home again as before; Odysseus should not have forgotten that he had left home because of the poverty and gone for the adventure because of the poverty. 

시인은 이타키는 오디세우스가 삶의 긴 여정 후에 도달한 곳이지 그가 떠난 고향이 아니라고 말한다. 길을 한 번 떠난 사람에게 더 이상 옛 고향은 없다. 새로 도착하는 낯선 장소가 있을 뿐이다. 고향마저도 그 여정의 일부일 뿐이다. 그 어떤 여행자도 돌아올 것을 생각하고 길을 떠나지 않는다. 미지의 세계에 대한 호기심과 모험에 대한 기대감으로 떠날 뿐이다. 그러기에 그가 비록 고향에 되돌아온다 해도 그곳은 그가 계획했던 목적지가 아니다. 그렇게 수많은 일을 겪고, 위대한 업적을 쌓은 후에 반응이 어떨까 하고 한번 들러보는 또 다른 장소일 뿐이다. 고향에서 여행을 끝낸다면 그는 진정한 여행자가 아니다. 진정한 모험가에게 고향은 또 다른 여행을 떠나기 위한 경유지에 불과하다.

The poet says that Ithatka is the place where Odysseus returned from a long journey, but not the home he had left. There is no old home for the people who left the home once. There is always an unfamiliar place for the people who newly arrives. There is no traveler who leaves on the load thinking of his return. The traveler leaves with expectation of curiosity and adventure to the unknown world. Therefore, even if he returns home, the home is not the destination that he planned to finish his journey. The home is the place that he visits once to realize the understanding of himself after building great achievements from uncountable experiences. If the journey ends at home, he is not a true traveler. To the true travelers, home is just a transit place to depart for another journey.

시인은 이렇게 충고한다. 이타키가 아무리 초라하고 가난하더라도 원망해서는 안 된다. 오히려 길이 더 길기를 바라라. 영원히 계속되기를 바라라. 나그네는 길 위에 있을 때만 진실이고 가치가 있는 존재다. 그리고 우리의 삶은 죽는 날까지 계속되는 여행일 뿐이다. 여행을 느긋하게 음미하고 즐겨라. 그리고 여행에서 얻은 그 풍부한 경험으로 지혜로워져라.

The poet advises also as follows: Not to blame Ithaka no matter how shabby and poor it is; Wish for the road to be longer and longer; Wish the road to repeat forever and ever. Traveler is the being whose truth and value can be realized only on the road. And our lives are just a continuous journey until our deaths. Appreciate and enjoy the journey at ease. And be wise with all the experiences from the journey.
