Goal

The purpose of this course, 'How to Write and Present Research Results in English' fall semester 2016, is 1) to help students advance in their academic career (graduate or doctorate course) substantially by completing their research papers, 2) to make students learn concrete expressions to deliver their points effectively, and 3) to enhance the students' communication skills in English. As soon as the semester starts, students must submit a short version of a research paper (a summary of two A4-size pages) based on their research results. They are requested to prepare it during the summer vacation. Their writings will be reviewed and revised individually during the semester. For the study of concrete expressions, this semester will start with the conclusion part (textbook p.102) and continue on with all the remaining part. Following the last semester's studies on titles, acknowledgements, introduction, body and conclusion, students will learn various well chosen English expressions for the description of problems, quotations, experiments, reviews, examples, references, arguments, evaluation and various adverbial expressions through translation and memorization drills.

To enhance the students' communication skills in English, the course will be taught in English and will include conversation drills. Students may ask questions either in English or in Korean, but speaking in English is recommended. If needed, a short summary in Korean may be given at the end of the class. Also, students must read and memorize model sentences and take quizzes throughout the semester.

Course Requirements

The class will be from 10:00 -12:30 am on Friday: The first one and a half hours will be lecture, the next 15 min. taking the quiz, and the following 15 min. review of the lecture and quiz (I'll ask one of the students to summarize the lecture of the day). The last 30 minutes will be devoted to conversation drills.

Students must submit their reports as soon as the semester starts.

On the first day, students must bring a copy of a model writing: Sung-Soo Lim et al. 'An Accurate Worst Case Timing Analysis for RISC Processors.' in IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering. VOL. 21. No.7, JULY 1995

Assignments

Students are responsible for the required writing, readings, doing homework assignments, and attending the lectures. Assignments will be the submission of a research paper, reading the chapters of the day in advance, translating the assigned sentences, and memorizing model sentences in every class. Students must submit the assignments before every class.
